Pengalaman Membuat Baja Kompos Dari Daun Kering

Assalamualaikum dan Salam Sejahtera

I will like to write down my experience of composting in Denai Alam.

My composting method is just the daun kering outside the house. I dont use any kitchen waste because that will attract tikus. If you want to compost your kitchen waste than you should go with bokashi method (I never do this because I dont spent time in kitchen).

When I first started composting I used tong sampah. After sometime I dont like this method because it stink. Apparently there is 2 way how leaves compost, anaerobic and aerobic. Both method will give you end product of compost. Anaerobic compost  dont require oxygen while aerobic need air circulation. So I decided to switch to aerobic method.

I allocate a spare at the corner of my house. I bought jaring and I built square walls. Composting dont work in small volume. So that is why compost dalam pasu dont work. You need maybe 1mx1mx1meter of volume.I throw in rumput and daun kering and make it stack.Daun kering alone will take a long time to compose so NEED to mix it with rumput clipping.

This method worked for me, no smell and the leaves can compost in 4-6 month. But there are 2 disadvantages. You have have your compost at the bottom of the pile.  Kalau nak harvest you have to go through daun at the top. Secondly because I compost this on tanah. A lot roots from nearby trees take residence in my my compost.I notice roots from pokok jati(rain tree) and my pokok belimbing find its way there. They are sucking all the juice from my compost. So to counter these two problems I redesign my compost bin.

I now go with cement at bottom and cement block wall (to avoid tree roots come in). I also make 3 compartment so that I can separate old compost and new compost for easy harvest. To my astonishment the root can still pass through my concrete wall. At this point I realize roots are like war refugees that need shelter. So what should I do? deny them or provide shelter. I harvest some compost and left some for the roots.

So in my conlusion, for household composting, it is diffcult to harvest the baja to be used for you gardening. The daun kering when composed will shrink to less than 1/10 of its original volume. You start with big volume and end up with small volume and may not be enough to use. It takes a long time to compost so it is difficult to time it with your gardening need. I resort of buying baja from outside myself. The quality of the compost also is not necessary good because it depends what you throw in. Although I find out that my compose is mostly better than organic baja I bought from outside but still not up to expectation.

Currently I still have the motivation to compost because of other reasons. It is easy to cleanup around the house. I can throw is rumput that I mow and all the daun kering from pucuk ubi, bunga kantan and pokok rambutan surrounding my house. Save me plastic bag to pack it.

The compost bin will be also fill with insect. If you takut with insect than this type of composting is not for you. In my compost bin I have snail, bubuk, lipan (a lot of it), gonggok, ulat tanduk larvae. All this insect actually help to accelerate the composting process. The compost will turn into vermi-compost texture.

Compost bin is not a pretty side. Unless you make it tidy. Here in Denai Alam all the house is very nice. My house is chaos so sorry for that. I must say that the composting experience is very rewarding.

To understood the cycle of life. Salam, thanks and regards.
